What do you reach for when you have a snack attack? Potato Chips are tempting. Fritos and chee-tos are both crunchy and flavorful. But our favorite snack foods can be high in fat and sodium and low innutrition. Of course, as the Lay's potato chip slogan goes, and it applies to many crunchy faves, "bet you can't eat just one."
You may have tried HEALTHIER alternatives some of which are so blah that you can eat just one. But we found several new and very tasty snacks from two major soyfood companies. Not only do you get extra protein, but you also get the health benefits of soy. Genisoy Soy Crisps, made of soy and rice, have lots of flavor and crunch, with only four calories per crisp. We especially liked the Tangy Salt & Vinegar, which has only 290 mg of sodium per one-ounce serving. That single serving equals a generous 25 crisps for 100 calories, including seven grams of protein and two grams of fiber. The Rich Cheddar and Zesty Barbeque flavors were good too. Who needs all the fat found in regular chips and snack crackers?
TLC For Snack Crackers
If you put a lot of TLC (tender lovin' care) into your diet, you might like Kashi's TLCs (Tasty Little Crackers). One of our favorite cereal makers has put its seven whole grains and sesame into snack crackers. They don't have as much protein as the soy crisps, but 15 crackers, just over one ounce, have 130 calories, with three grams of protein, two grams of fiber and three grams of fat (none of it saturated or hydrogenated). This is the nutrition info for the Natural Ranch flavor' other flavors, such as Original and Honey Sesame, have similar stats.
Sweet Tooth Aching?
If sweet and crunchy is the flavor you crave, Genisoy's Apple Cinnamon soy crisps have that yummy cookie taste without all the extra calories. For a real taste indulgence, the soy-nut trail mixes give you dried fruit, nuts, soy nuts and chocolate for about 130 calories per ounce, with just three to four grams of protein and two grams of fiber. Some soy products have more sugar and fat than others do, so check labels.
